Three weeks ago we ended our successful kickstarter campaign, raising $41,000 to bring a shipping container to Eastern Market Detroit. This is a siginificant amount of money to raise through crowdfunding. Less than 10% of all kickstarter campaigns (over 40,000 to date) have raised more than $20,000. It’s a testament to the power of this idea and the many great people involved that we pulled this off.
This is the first phase in our hotel project. The container is being built out now to act as a “mini lobby” where people can gather, connect, and share stories. It will be pretty and well decorated by the time you come to visit us! And at the end of our time in Eastern Market (October), we will move First Container to our future home site on the Dequindre Cut. Everything that happens here will become part of the future hotel.
We will have special events planned for our grand opening on Flower Day, May 19th, including Storytellers Ivory Williams resident at the Virgil Carr Center and Marsha Music a current Kresge Fellow in Performance Literature. Both are lifelong Detroiters with deep insight about the city and life here. We also have Lauren Hood playing records, a real treat, though people around town know her also as a founder of Deep Dive Detroit, an organization that helps people of all backgrounds overcome stereotypes and prejudices. And will be launching Speed Story!! Led by storyteller and Detroit blogger Amanda Lewen, Speed Story is a super fun and interactive game designed to get people to connect people through stories. We will be doing ths every hour on the hour beginning at 8am May 19th. And having a great time. You can get more details on our progress and programming at FIRSTCONTAINER.COM
We’d like to thank our partners and sponsors in sticking with us through this ambitious process!
