When a flint hits a stone sparks fly! And when sparks fly, we ignite new possibilities. Together.
Have you lived in Detroit all your life, or most of your life, and feel a deep sense of city pride? You’ve seen a lot and believe with hard work we can get through anything. Or did you just move here in the last few years, for a job, for a project? Were you excited by the possibilities? We think you guys have stuff to learn from each other. We need each other. It might be weird. It might be crazy fun. It might be both!
We’re matching Detroit Lifers (that’s you, city diehard!) with Detroit newcomers, so each might see Detroit through new eyes and maybe make some new friends. We want you to be a part of it.
When you get matched you also get a booklet that contains lists of things in the city you might do together, discount incentives to attend select places and events as a pair, and easy games and activities you can play to get to know each other a little better.
You simply commit to three activities over six months.
Every month on the 3rd thursday we’ll host a conversation with some of our sparks and an audience of whoever wants to be a part of the discussion. And three times this summer our partner WDET will come by to record some conversations between sparks for on-air broadcast! Our season closing party will be at the Auditorium in the main library branch in Midtown.
We recognize there are people who were not born in Detroit but have lived here for many years and consider it home. We also recognize that people who live outside official city limits often consider themselves longtime Detroiters. The program is designed to be inclusive and no one will be turned away on technicalities. That’s part of the problem we are trying to address! We believe crossing the lines and exploring how we are alike and how we are different is important for everyone.
Be a spark!
